Automatic Rigging and Animation of 3D Characters

One of my favourite things at Siggraph this year was the Pinocchio system by Ilya Baran and Jovan Popović. They use a sphere packing method to approximate a character's shape, then fit a canonical skeleton within. They've generously released their libraries and some sample data at their website.
